Definition of AS

Ankylosis

  • fusion of bones: the fusion of the bones of a joint, often as a result of disease or injury, or intentionally through surgery
  • stiffness of joint bones: stiffness or immobility in a joint caused by bones fusing together as a result of disease or injury or arising from surgery to join one bone or part to another

Early 18th century. Via modern Latin, from Greek agkulosis, 'stiffening of the joints', from agkuloun, 'to bend', from agkulos, 'bent'.

Spondylitis

  • inflammation of the vertebrae and the attached discs and ligaments

Mid-19th century. Formed from Latin spondylus, 'vertebra', from Greek spondulos, of unknown origin.
